It’s official. I have FINALLY finalized my 2017 racing schedule. At least, I hope it’s finalized. And without further ado, my racing schedule for 2017:
A lot of time and effort, not to mention money, went into picking out the above races. Things I take into consideration while picking a race?
- Cost – This one is obvious. I’m a graduate student. I can’t afford to run all the races I want to run. This year, I spent over $600 on registrations alone. That’s for 6 races. Holy moly. That’s crazy. Whoever said running was free lied. Shoes, registrations, body glide, nutrition gels – they’re not cheap, but I love running so much, I don’t mind cutting my costs elsewhere. The Great Chocolate Race in Long Beach was so cheap that I jumped at the chance. Also, I get free chocolate. I love chocolate.
- Location – I’m based in San Diego so I’m more willing to race in my town. That’s why I signed up for the San Diego Half Marathon. I love running around my hometown. Traveling adds to the cost (Hotels, flights), but if the race is amazing enough, I will make the trek. 🙂
- Size and Reputation – I like bigger races. Something about running with others makes me happy and don’t we all want to be happy? 🙂 Also, bigger races usually mean a better reputation (Chicago Marathon, SeaWheeze Half Marathon, and Las Vegas Rock N Roll). If I’m going to pay money to run, that run better be damn fun.
- Medal – Most races don’t release their medals until a few months before the race. At that point, registration fees are higher. And since I take cost into high consideration, I won’t have usually seen the medals until after I’ve signed up. Sometimes, I’ll look into the previous year’s medal and decide based on that.
- Redundancy – Have I run that race before? If I have, it’s lower on my list to run. I don’t typically like to run the same race twice because let’s be honest; there are so many races out there and there’s only so little time. There are a few exceptions to this rule of mine though. The San Diego Rock N Roll Half marathon was my first half marathon and will always have a special place in my heart. I will probably run that one every year until my legs can’t run no more. Maybe I can one day be the oldest person to complete that race. A girl can dream, can’t she? 🙂 Another race I’d run again? The NYC Marathon because WOW; that was just an amazing experience and the most fun I ever had while running. PERIOD. And that’s saying a lot because that’s TWENTY-SIX POINT TWO freaking miles.
What races are you running in 2017? Any of them you’re particularly excited about? And what do you take into consideration when registering for a race?
Fyi (you may already know this): The rock n roll series are having discounted registration fees for today only.

Thanks! I did already know that, but I had already signed up for the SD and LV ones. I was very tempted to register for another one, but I’m already going out of town for 3 races next year and those costs add up. 😦 Thanks for the follow too! I’ll be sure to follow you back.

Wow that’s a nice schedule! I actually like running races I’ve done before as a gauge of progress but I can see why you might not want to do repeats when there’s so many you want to try. Good luck!

That makes sense. I never really focused too much on progress, but since I’m becoming much more interested, I’ll do a repeat race here and there to check my progress. Thanks!

Whoa you got into Seawheeze? Nice job – I hear that sells out in like 30 minutes! I also hear it’s a blast – have fun!!
I prefer big races too. Which is weird, because I’m pretty introverted so I feel like I should prefer smaller races, but I really feed off the crowd energy, the hype going into the race, and having so many others to share the running/training experience with. Hence why the $200 Chitown price tag was worth it!

Haha Yeah, Seawheeze registration was a crazy experience. Their site wasn’t ready for the influx of people signing up. It kicked people out of the queue and rejected perfectly valid credit cards. Within 3 minutes, I got this page that said tickets were unavailable even though there were still sole available. It was a hot mess. Anyway, the Chicago marathon will be a blast. I’ll see you there! 🙂

I’m so intrigued by the Vegas one. That’s at night, right? I’ve heard great things!

Yes! It is at night! It’ll be my first night half so I’m pretty excited. That’s actually why I signed up for it. I originally wanted to do the wine and dine half that disneyworld holds, but this year, they changed it from a night race to a day race. I was pretty bummed, but Vegas should be pretty fun. 🙂 I will definitely let you know how it goes.

It seems really neat! Plus I heard it’s only one of two times they close the strip. Very cool!

I have actually been in Vegas the only other time they close off the strip – on New Years Eve. I got sick from the freezing cold that time. haha Hopefully, that won’t be the case this time around. 🙂

All good choices! I have run a FEW of those!! You are smart for doing the half in Vegas and not the full…trust me running in the dark for 26.2 miles was quite interesting!

Oh good! I hadn’t actually looked up the course map. I have just really wanted to run a night race and thought Vegas would be fun since it’s Sin City and all ;). Are you running in darkness after 13.1? LOL

The half course is run entirely on the lit up strip so you will be good! It’s really a fun race. Enjoy!!

This list might actually help me decide what races to do next year… I haven’t even gotten my head round Christmas yet so I guess we’ll have to wait and see !

I live off a graduate student’s stipend so I have to choose my races early to avoid the increase in fees. 🙂 I hope that the list does help and if you end up choosing a race that I run, I’ll see you there! 🙂

Nice schedule. I rarely register for things early, I’d rather pay more than DNS. Which is looker like the smart choice as I am so behind in training for Carlsbad, January may be race free! I am looking forward to Livermore in March though.

Being race free for a month is good though. Gives you time to train properly. I’m hoping to PR next year so I need to take my training more seriously. Hopefully my schedule will allow for it. 🙂
